From the editors

Welcome to the 2009 African Economic Outlook (AEO) electronic edition. A companion to the paper version, this e-AEO features the 47 full-length country notes. Since it was launched eight years ago, the AEO has grown to become the reference on Africa through its comprehensive analysis of economic, social and political developments on the continent. This is a unique tool combining the expertise of the African Development Bank, the OECD Development Centre the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, with support from the European Commission. The AEO also draws on knowledge from a network of African research centres for the planning, research, writing and dissemination of the report. This year, we have covered virtually the entire continent: 47 countries which account for 99% of the continent’s population and 97% of its economic output. The 2009 edition also contains a special focus on Innovations and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and their special role in economic and social development in Africa.
